Widening Participation is a crucial part of what we do. We can reach the students that don’t often get reached. We can provide them with a diversity of engagement experience that isn’t often on offer. Already nearly 30% of students participating in I’m a Scientist and I’m an Engineer are from a WP or geographically remote school. We need to increase that proportion and work with university widening participation teams to help them reach these students. So if you, like us, believe that all children should have equality of opportunity and that the location of their school should not reduce the chances of inspiration and engagement, then you will be interesting in the Widening Participation Project Wrangler role.

Our projects reach the schools that HEI can’t. Your role will be to ensure we are reaching more WP students and working with HEI WP teams to help them deliver on their objectives. Understanding what we do and the impact it has on others is critical to our projects. It helps us improve them, it helps teachers and scientists use them more effectively and it helps us find funding for the projects. We are evaluation geeks. We publish everything we find out – check out our evaluation posts on I’m a Scientist. We need to step up to a new level though. We want someone who is equally fascinated by Science Capital, by the role that scientists and engineers play in forming young people’s views and by differences between online and offline engagement. We love evaluation. We need to do more and do it better. We need an in-house evaluator to help devise and implement a strategy. It’s hands on.
